Good Union Members Respect Picket Lines A good union member is extremely careful when confronted by a picket line situation. When a picket line is established where he/she is working. He/She Leaves, does not talk, just leaves. Read the picket sign as you leave. Do not hang around or near the job. You know that once a picket line is established, union officials are gagged/handcuffed, from giving advice pertaining to that job. They can only tell whether or not the line is authorized from the building trades. You do not allow yourself to be drawn into conversations with anyone from the job site. A Good Union Member Knows their Rights. You have the right not to work behind any picket lines. You have the right to decide for yourself whether or not to walk off the job being picketed. You understand that your trade may be under attack next. You know that a two gate system means a picket line, and that you have the right not to work, no matter how many gates the employer sets up. Conscience Card: Picketing has been described by the Supreme Court as the working man's means of communication. A Picket is a message to you that some of your fellow workers are engaged in a labor dispute and need your help. It is your constitutional right as an American Citizen to decide how you will respond to the picket. Under the law, your union cannot help you make that decision. You can seek guidance only through your conscience, and then decide which side you are on.
